The development of the district of Cox’s Bazar, better known as the “Longest Unbroken Sea beach – Cox’s Bazar” is one of the most important aspects of the overall development of Bangladesh. 4 of the 10 Prime Ministerial priority projects known as the ‘Fast-Track’ Program are located in Cox’s Bazar district. These are – Matarbari 1200MW Coal Power Plant, Dohazari-Ramu-Cox’s Bazar Gundam Railway, Deep Sea Port and LNG Terminal. There are many other projects such as the construction of power plants and sub-stations, construction of roads, bridges and approach roads, establishing economic zones, setting up tourism parks, establishing educational institutions and setting up offices of the various law enforcement agencies, etc. Besides, some military bases are being installed in Cox’s Bazar for national security purposes.

The acquisition process of approximately 15528 acres of land through 62 LA cases for allotment is ongoing in addition to the allotment of the government Khas land – which is, indeed, one of the largest land allocations for development activities in a single district in Bangladesh. The land minister’s visit to Cox’s Bazar was very important for the very reason.

Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury spoke on land management, acquisition and survey at the ‘Special monthly revenue meeting’ held in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday noon of February 23 and at a view exchange meeting with Cox’s Bazar District Awami League and its wings leaders at the conference room of Cox’s Bazar Hill-Down Circuit House on Saturday late afternoon February 22. These two meetings were 2 of his 4 scheduled programs of the Cox’s Bazar visit.

Describing corruption in the land acquisition process as a hindrance to the development of the country in these two meetings, the land minister said the government has decided to stringently suppress these irregularities. The minister again instructed the concerned authorities to pay compensation money after the issuance of notice under Section 8 regarding the land acquisition. Besides, the Land Minister reiterated that no manual application for the land mutation would be accepted from March 17, 2020.

It is to be noted, the Cox’s Bazar District Administration informed at the revenue meeting that, from 2018 to the present, 08 surveyors and 02 Kanungos are transferred as results of various complaints. Besides, due to the litigation – 1 surveyor is apprehended and 02 are still at large.
