Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Sanatani organizations’ coalition and an excommunicated member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), has been arrested at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The arrest was made on Monday afternoon by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Bangladesh Police. Additional Commissioner of DB, Rezaul Karim Mallik, confirmed the arrest, while unnamed officials from the DMP and CMP disclosed that Chinmoy was taken into custody in connection with a “special case.”

“Chinmoy krishna Dash was arrested by officers identifying themselves as DB and taken into a vehicle bearing the number Dhaka Metro-Ch 521161. We are preparing for protests.”

Suman Kumar Roy, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Sanatani Party and a Supreme Court lawyer, added, “I’ve received information that two other Sanatani leaders were also detained along with Chinmoy Krishna. We respect the law, but if Chinmoy has been unjustly arrested, we will be compelled to stage protests and launch broader initiatives.”

Chinmoy Krishna had arrived at the airport on Monday to travel to Chattogram when he was detained. His arrest follows months of nationwide protests by Hindus demanding their rights under an interim government, including eight primary demands later expanded to 13. Chinmoy played a leading role in these protests as a principal speaker.

Sudden Protests in Chattogram-Dhaka-Barisal
News of Chinmoy Krishna’s arrest quickly spread on social media, prompting a mass gathering of Hindu monks, saints, and laypeople at Chattogram’s Cheragi intersection. Protesters defied police efforts to disperse them, raising slogans such as `If anything happens to Chinmoy, every home will burn’, `Chinmoy is fearless; we won’t leave the streets’, `Who are you? Who am I? Sanatani, Sanatani!’ `Sanatanis have awakened!’

As the evening progressed, the protests intensified, with Cheragi intersection reverberating with the chants of the Sanatani community.

Protest leaders accused law enforcement of trying to suppress their movement through intimidation. “If Chinmoy is not released and cases against him are not withdrawn, we will launch stricter protests,” said one leader.

Protests also erupted in Dhaka, Ramna Kali Mandir, Cox’s Bazar, Barisal, and other areas in Bamgladesh.

Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council Condemns Chinmoy Krishna’s Arrest

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned and protested the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari. The statement was issued in a press release signed by the acting General Secretary, Monindra Kumar Nath, on Monday evening.

The press release expressed concerns that the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das could harm Bangladesh’s international reputation regarding freedom of expression and human rights. The organization demanded his immediate release.

On October 30, BNP leader Firoz Khan filed a case at Kotwali Police Station against Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a prominent organizer of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), and 19 others. The case included charges of sedition for alleged disrespect to the national flag.

Following the filing of the case, the complainant, Firoz Khan, was expelled from the BNP for violating party policies. Law enforcement detained two individuals in connection with the case: Rajesh Choudhury and Hridoy Das.

The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna has further intensified tensions and raised questions about the treatment of minority voices and activists in Bangladesh.
