Dipok Roy, Rangpur Correspondent: The Taraganj Upazila Agriculture Extension Department of Rangpur has launched a massive drive to produce saplings in trays under the fiscal year 2020-21 of the agricultural incentive program for the cultivation of hybrid varieties of boro paddy.  The seedbed, which is suitable for sowing within 20 days of sowing, has been constructed at West Rahimapur village of Kursha union of the upazila.  According to the Upazila Agriculture Department, the seedbed has been constructed in 4,500 trays comprising of 8 farmers of the village.  Paddy trees will be planted in 50 acres of land with the seedlings produced from the seedbed.

According to the information received from the Upazila Agriculture Department, in the fiscal year 2020-21 of the agricultural incentive program, the allocation for planting seedbeds in trays for the cultivation of hybrid varieties of boro paddy has been given only in Taraganj upazila out of 6 upazilas of Rangpur district.  According to him, the Agriculture Department selected 6 marginal farmers from West Rahimapur village in Rahimapur block of Kursha union of Taraganj upazila.  The seedbed has been constructed in 4,500 trays comprising of 6 selected farmers.  Each tray contains 100 to 120 grams of seeds.  Before sowing the seeds, 5 per cent soil with 1 per cent organic manure and amount of bioderma fertilizer have been given in the trays.  On the day of sowing, the seedling is covered with thin plastic by spraying blinds.  Then occasional irrigation is required.

According to the agriculture office, the initiative has been taken to mechanize the farmers without waiting for the workers.  The Department of Agriculture will bear the cost of planting and cutting paddy seedlings in a total of 50 acres of land of 6 selected farmers.  Its main objective is to motivate the farmers by planting and cutting saplings through machinery.  As a result, on the one hand, the labor crisis of the farmers will be solved and on the other hand, the cost of paddy cultivation will be reduced.  The Upazila Agriculture Department is hopeful that the farmers will benefit greatly as a result.

Rahimapur Block Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO) said.  Samsuzzaman said the seedlings would be much healthier than the seedlings produced directly in the soil because of the seedbed in the tray.  The yield of paddy produced from these seedlings will be higher, from which the farmer will benefit.

Urmi Tabassum, agronomist, Upazila Agriculture Officer, said that there would be no damage or loss of seeds due to construction of seedbed in the tray.  The seedlings produced from these seeds will be planted and cut by machine.  In this way, on the one hand, the labor crisis of the farmers will be solved and on the other hand, the farmers will also benefit financially as the cost is less and the yield is higher.  We hope that the farmers will be encouraged and later they will be interested in making seedbeds in trays on their own initiative and will move ahead with the use of machinery for planting saplings, weeding and cutting of paddy trees.  As a result, farmers will benefit by reducing the cost of crop production by resolving the labor crisis.
