The Bangladesh Embassy in Mexico City celebrated Sheikh Russel Day on October 18, 2023, marking his 59th birth anniversary. The event, themed ‘Sheikh Russel: Lucent, Fearless, Innocent, Indomitable,’ showcased the participation of around 260 students from Acquiles Serdon Primary School in Bosque de Chapultepec, Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico City.
The program began with a warm welcome from the school’s Director General, Ana Maria Valencia Antele, who expressed deep appreciation for this occasion, which allowed students to learn about a new country, culture, and the legacy of Sheikh Russel. Following the ceremonial flag presentation, the students delivered an impressive performance, featuring music and dance, including the traditional ‘la bamba’ dance from the State of Veracruz. Additionally, students shared interesting facts about Bangladesh with the audience.
Ambassador Abida Islam, in her address, provided insights into Sheikh Russel’s life and the significance of the day, highlighting his kindness and compassion. The first part of the program concluded with the distribution of informational leaflets about Sheikh Russel, along with cake cutting and distribution of refreshments for all attendees.
In the second phase, Ambassador Islam laid a floral wreath at Sheikh Russel’s portrait at the Embassy, accompanied by all the officials of the Embassy. Messages from the Hon’ble President and the Hon’ble Prime Minister were read by the Ambassador and the Counsellor. A documentary about Sheikh Russel’s life received from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was screened, followed by a discussion session where participants shared thoughts on the significance of Sheikh Russel Day.
In her speech, Ambassador Abida Islam emphasized that Sheikh Russel Day in Bangladesh commemorates the short yet impactful life of Sheikh Russel, a symbol of childhood innocence tragically lost on August 15, 1975. She also stated that his memory inspires all to protect children’s innocence and instill values of compassion and resilience in the younger generation. His legacy influences community development, technological advancement in education, and national unity, guiding Bangladesh towards progress and compassion.
Finally, the program concluded with special prayers offered for the departed souls of Sheikh Russel, the Father of the Nation, and all the martyred members of his family. Prayers were also extended for the peace, prosperity, and well-being of the country and its people.
