Supporters of Sharif Osman Hadi, the convener of the Inquilab Mancha, took to the streets in Chattogram to protest his death. Upon hearing the news of his death, they gathered at Gate-2 of Sholoshohor in Chattogram. From there, groups marched and attacked the Indian Assistant High Commission office. However, due to the presence of law enforcement, no unwanted casualties occurred.

After 11 PM on Thursday, a group of 50 to 60 youths, under the banner of “Student-People,” gathered from Gate-2 area and stationed themselves in front of the Indian Assistant High Commission in the Khulshi area of Chattogram. During this time, incidents of brick-throwing, vandalism, and other disruptions occurred. Law enforcement dispersed the crowd upon arrival at the scene and arrested seven individuals. The police, however, did not clarify what legal action would be taken against them.

Eyewitnesses said that after news of Hadi’s death spread on social media, around 10:45–11 PM, some “student-people” gathered in front of the Indian Assistant High Commission. They protested Hadi’s killing with anti-India and anti-Awami League slogans. At one point, they threw bricks and vandalized several areas in front of the office. Police used baton charges to disperse the crowd.

An employee at the Indian High Commission said that suddenly a group arrived and started attacking the office. “At first, we couldn’t understand what was happening. Before we could figure out the reason, we saw bricks being thrown and moved to a safe place. Over 200 bricks landed around the office. Fortunately, the police were there to help. Otherwise, we would have faced serious danger. Even now (Friday at 3 AM), the police are keeping watch. We are receiving legal assistance as well.”

On the same night, a few groups went to the residence of former Awami League education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel at Chasma Hill. Initially, a motorcycle in front of the house was set on fire. Subsequently, the protesters entered the residence and carried out extensive vandalism and arson.

Khulshi Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahin Alam said, “The attack occurred after people gathered in front of the Indian Assistant High Commission. Several people were arrested at the scene. We are verifying their involvement. If evidence is found, legal action will be taken.” He also added, “Currently, additional police forces are deployed at the Indian High Commission premises.”

Sharif Osman Hadi, who had been receiving treatment in Singapore after being shot, passed away on Thursday around 10:45 PM (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). He was shot in the head on Box Culvert Road, Puranapaltan, Dhaka, the day after the 13th national parliamentary elections and the announcement of the general referendum schedule last Friday (December 12).
