Staff Reporter: A police inspector and two constables have been caught on camera while manhandling a woman in the middle of the road

A video of several policemen inhumanly beating a woman on a Dhaka street has gone viral on social media, pulling up the issue of police brutality yet again and leading to a barrage of harsh criticism from the netizens.
The incident took place on the street in front of Bangabhaban, the presidential palace, on Wednesday.
The brutal act caught on a mobile phone’s camera was first shared on Facebook group Desperately Seeking – Dhaka (DSD) from a profile named Drift King. The video was also shared on that profile’s wall.
However, after several hours, Drift King’s profile was found unavailable and the post in DSD removed.
But by then, the video had made way to other social media platforms including YouTube and Facebook.com.

In the 30-second clip, a police inspector, identified by the insignia on his shoulders, and two constables were seen manhandling the woman, who was also carrying a bag, in the middle of the road. The officer was also seen slapping her repeatedly as she tried to defend herself.
At the end of the video, one of the constables was seen and heard verbally attacking the person who filmed the incident. The person was then forcibly moved from the area.
Although why the woman was beaten was not clear in the video, many people on the Facebook posts were seen leaving angry reactions and comments, saying how police had no right to beat someone this way in public.
Reached for comment, DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “The woman was lying on the footpath. She was asked to leave the area as a VIP was scheduled to pass through there.”
Regarding the way the woman was beaten, he said: “We will look into the allegation.”
