The forest department is working to fill the country with greenery -Environment and Forests Minister

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md. Shahab Uddin said that the forest department is working to fill the country with greenery to create a healthy living environment for the citizens.  Along with the government, everyone should plant at least one sapling of forest, fruit and medicinal plants and devote themselves to building a hunger and poverty free Sonar Bangla based on green economy.  The Minister said that the achievement of Mymensingh Forest Department in plantation is extraordinary.  Work is also being done successfully here to resolve elephant-human conflict.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin said these things in the chief guest’s speech at the inauguration of the ‘Tree Planting Campaign and Tree Fair-2023’ and the distribution of saplings among the students organized in the park under the theme of ‘Planting trees and building a healthy generation’ held in Sherpur DC Udyan on Saturday.

Referring to the activities of Mymensingh Forest Department, the Forest Minister said that 9 thousand 468 acres of gardens have been created in Mymensingh Forest Department from 2018 to 2023.  Also, 270,000  trees have been planted by creating 270 km of gardens along the roads involving local communities.  Moreover, 70 thousand saplings of trees have been planted on the 70 km border road between Forest Department Netrakona and Mymensingh.

Shahab Uddin said, between 2021 and 2023, the Mymensingh Forest Department has provided “training for alternative livelihood” to a total of 2,665 beneficiaries in 5 districts and already 2,111 people have been disbursed loans of 7 crore nine hundred and ninety eight thousand six hundred and forty rupees.  A total of 156 infrastructure development projects have been undertaken at a cost of one crore forty two lakh thirty nine thousand four hundred and ninety five taka.  Meanwhile, construction of 1 Divisional Forest Officer Office Complex, 1 Officer Dormitory, 2 Range Offices, 1 Beat Office, 3 Staff Barracks is in progress.

The Environment Minister said that the work of setting up 8 km of solar and biofencing in Mymensingh Forest Division in Sherpur district to resolve the human-elephant conflict is nearing completion.  Another 50 km of solar and biofencing are being planned.  At present, the process of declaring wild elephant sanctuaries and movement corridors in the hill forests of Sherpur district is under process.  Apart from this, since 2014, compensation of Tk 92,25,000 has been given to those affected by elephants.

The minister said that around 20 thousand 126 people involved in social forestry in Mymensingh Forest Division have been distributed about 73 crore 61 lakh rupees so far and about 5 crore rupees continue to be distributed every year.  From the financial year 2018-2019, about 18 crore rupees have been distributed so far.

Jatiya Sangsad Whip valiant Freedom Fighter Alhaj Md. Atiur Rahman Atiq, Forest Department Sufal Project Director Gobind Roy and Central Forest Zone Forest Conservator Hossain Muhammad Nishad along with local administration and forest department officials were present among others.
