International Desk: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressesd a rally in Bengaluru in poll-bound Karnataka yesterday.

PM Modi said farmers were his government’s top priority
He coined the abbreviation ‘TOP’ – Tomato, Onion, and Potato
Divya Spandana, a top aide of Rahul Gandhi’s, mocked the prime minister’s remarks
Tomato, Onion, and Potato, or “T.O.P” – this Narendra Modi original, coined by the prime minister today during a rally in Bengaluru, was meant to convince voters in poll-bound Karnataka that farmers were a priority for his government.
Divya Spandana, the Congress’ social media chief, responded with this question: “Is this what happens when you’re on POT?”

The BJP wasted no time in posting a riposte. “Congress keeps it classy, again,” said Amit Malviya, the BJP’s I-T chief, in a tweet dripping with sarcasm.

Spandana had this answer for Malviya.

Criticism also came from a somewhat unexpected quarter. Shehzad Poonawalla, a former Maharashtra Congress secretary, said he wasn’t surprised by the “unparliamentary language” Spandana had used.

In his speech, Modi attempted to woo farmers, reminding voters of his government’s commitment to increase MSPs, and promising them that the Karnataka BJP chief, presumably the party’s chief ministerial candidate, had farmers’ best interests at heart.
Earlier today, the Karnataka Congress alleged that Modi hadn’t kept several promises he made ahead of the general elections in 2014. “What new fake promises will you make today, Shri Narendra Modi(?),” the party asked.

Karnataka is one of four large states that will elect new assemblies this year. The others – Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan – are governed by the BJP.
