Land Minister at the Executive Meeting of Turkey OIC

Bangladesh Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, MP participated on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh at an emergency OIC executive committee meeting at foreign minister level which was held today, 22 March 2019 in Istanbul on the issue of terrorist attacks on Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand on 15 March.

The meeting was convened and chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the current Chair of OIC Summit. OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousuf Al Othaimeen attended the session. Foreign Minister of New Zealand Winston Peters attended the session at the invitation of Turkey as a guest of honour.

He also delivered a statement with emphasis on interfaith harmony as well as giving a brief description of actions taken by his government to express and extend support and respect to Muslims community in New Zealand. During his statement a brief video was presented showing the outpouring of sympathy by New Zealanders and recitation of verses from holy Quran at the opening session of New Zealand parliament couple of days ago.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a statement before the meeting highlighting the importance of collective efforts by OIC to tackle this menace of terrorism and Islamophobia and hatred against Muslims in non Muslim countries.

Bangladesh Minister while condemning the terrorist attacks and expressing solidarity with Muslim community in New Zealand as like other delegates, emphasized the need to be united together to stand up against this menace across all social, cultural, education and legal platforms to dispel Islamophobia and promote interfaith harmony in a comprehensive manner. He also underlined to enhance OIC collaboration within the umbrella of the UN.

He informed the meeting that father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman right after Liberation led the country with adoption of a constitution with clear provisions for coexistence of all religions, colors and creed. Under the able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh is following a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and violent extremism in its all forms and manifestations, the minister stated in his statement. He also touched upon persecution of Rohingya Muslims in rakhine state in Myanmar who took refuge in Bangladesh and the Government of Bangladesh accommodated them despite resource constraints.

Bangladesh Minister appreciated the government and the people of New Zealand for their prompt support and respect towards the Muslim community there. The Emergency session of Foreign Ministers ended with adoption of a Communique calling for taking pragmatic measures by OIC to tackle this menace of terrorism, Islamophobia and hatred against Muslim around the world. The session was preceded by a senior officials meeting in the evening of 21 March where the communique was finalized.
