Why I stand in support of a liberal, human rights–based government

Why do I stand in support of a liberal, human rights–based government? For years, I have stood beside minority communities, human rights defenders, and dissenting voices—out of a belief in personal freedom, justice, and effective democracy. My position has not changed with changes in government. My opposition to Sheikh Hasina’s party is not personal; it is a principled stance born from concerns about the nature of governance, the erosion of rights, and the need for institutional reform.

Recently, Mendi Safadi expressed such an opinion in a post on his verified Facebook account.

He also put forward several notable arguments in favor of a liberal, human rights–based government in the country.

1. Minority rights are the backbone of democracy
Bangladesh’s strength lies in its diversity. Yet in reality, we have witnessed discrimination, insecurity, and barriers to justice faced by religious, ethnic, and political minorities. Democracy is not merely the rule of the majority—the true test of democracy is ensuring the protection of minorities.

2. Concentration of power and the weakening of institutions
Excessive centralization of power in governance, questions surrounding judicial independence, pressure on the media, and the shrinking of civic space weaken the state in the long run. Without strong institutions, even elections become meaningless.

3. Personal freedom means stability
Freedom of expression, peaceful protest, and fair justice are not enemies of stability; they are its foundation. Repression may impose silence, but it does not bring solutions. An open society is the path to sustainable development.

4. Why a liberal government is the right direction
A liberal government is not a slogan—it means equality before the law, effective legal protection for minorities, an independent judiciary, transparency, and a strong civil society. These principles build an inclusive economy, social peace, and public trust.

5. Looking ahead: responsibility and reform
Our goal is not revenge, but reform. Learning from past mistakes to bring about institutional change—so that the same mistakes are not repeated. My opposition is for safeguarding the future, not settling scores with the past.

6. The current government and the rise of extremism
The current government is effectively paving the way for radical and extremist Jamaat-e-Islami to come to power and is gradually pushing Bangladesh toward the establishment of Islamic law.

Following the fall of the fascist Awami League government and Sheikh Hasina, the present Yunus government has been systematically depriving Hindu minorities and other minority communities of jobs and opportunities. In many cases, Hindus and other minorities have been removed from their positions and replaced with Jamaat-backed individuals.

With the direct and indirect support of this “Yunus government,” Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP-affiliated groups have become involved in criminal activities such as extortion, looting, and forced land grabbing. The primary victims of these actions are minority communities, especially Hindus.

I will raise these serious human rights violations, the persecution of minorities, and anti-democratic activities in the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other international forums, so that the international community pays close attention to the situation and takes effective action.

Bangladesh’s future will be secure only when minority rights and personal freedoms are placed at the center of state policy. Only a liberal, justice-based government can ensure a stable and prosperous future for all citizens.
