The court has issued an order to show Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Sanatani Jagaran Jote, as arrested in the case filed over the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif near the Chattogram court premises.
On Monday (May 5), Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate S.M. Alauddin passed the order during a virtual hearing.
The matter was confirmed by Assistant Public Prosecutor of the court, Md. Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury.
He said that the investigating officer of the Alif murder case submitted an application to show Chinmoy as arrested, and after the hearing, the court granted it. For security reasons, Chinmoy was not brought to court physically; the hearing took place virtually.
On November 25 last year, while returning to Chattogram, Chinmoy Brahmachari was arrested by law enforcement from Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. He was shown arrested in a sedition case filed by a BNP leader at Kotwali Police Station and was produced before the court, where his bail was denied.
Later, while he was being taken to jail in a prison van, his followers blocked the vehicle and protested for about three hours. At one point, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) dispersed the protestors using batons and sound grenades.
During this time, a clash occurred between Chinmoy Krishna Das’s followers and law enforcement personnel. Later, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was found wounded in an alley beside the Rongom Cinema Hall opposite the Chattogram court entrance. He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Following the incident, Alif’s father filed a murder case naming 31 individuals at Kotwali Police Station. On the same day, Alif’s brother Khane Alam filed another case under the Explosives Act, naming 116 accused. Notably, Chinmoy Krishna Das was not named in either of these two cases.
