Chattogram Lawyers’ Strike at Court

In protest of the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, the Chattogram District Lawyers’ Association is observing a strike for the second consecutive day. Lawyers have been continuing their strike since Thursday morning.

On this day, black flags have been hoisted at the court premises. Additional police have been deployed as part of enhanced security at the court, and army patrols have also been intensified.

Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Kabir Islam Bijon stated that all court activities remain suspended today. However, victims will still receive assistance at the lawyers’ chambers. Lawyers have gathered at the court premises since morning.

Earlier, on Wednesday (November 27), a special notice signed by Chattogram District Lawyers’ Association President Mohammad Nazim Uddin Chowdhury and General Secretary Ashraf Hossain Chowdhury Razzaq was issued announcing the strike and six other decisions.

The notice stated: “On November 26, Advocate Saiful Islam Alif, a member of the Chattogram District Lawyers’ Association and resident of Lohagara, was brutally murdered while performing his professional duties by extremists associated with the ISKCON group. In protest of this murder, the following decisions were made at an emergency meeting of the association.”

The decisions included: Flying the association’s flag at half-mast and wearing black badges, A strike in all courts of Chattogram, A prayer meeting at Court Hill Jame Masjid after Jumu’ah prayers on Thursday for the soul of Lawyer Alif, The cancellation of the regular social gathering on the same day, A mourning procession will be held on December 1 at 2 p.m. from in front of Doyel Bhavan, and the association’s annual indoor games will be suspended.

The late Saiful Islam Alif became a member of the District Lawyers’ Association in 2018, later registered as a High Court lawyer, and was recently appointed as an Assistant Public Prosecutor at Chattogram Court.
