Dipok Roy, Taraganj (Rangpur) Correspondent : A UP chairman in Rangpur’s Taraganj upazila has been found to have embezzled around Rs 1.5 lakh from the ADP (Asian Development Program) project. According to the source, the chairman made the voucher in his own name instead of the voucher in the name of the project president. Based on the information obtained under the Right to Information Act, this information has come up against Mohiuddin Azam Kiran, the chairman of Sayar Union Parishad of the upazila.
According to the Right to Information Act, ADP has allocated Tk 150,000 for the purchase of musical instruments at Burirhat Cultural Center in Sayar Union in Taraganj Upazila in the 2018-19 financial year. The Upazila Engineering Department allocated the money for the purchase of harmoniums, drums, tabla, jipani, khol, mandira, dotara, setar, flute, kamak, keyboard and drums at the cultural center. But the investigation revealed that the project president Parul Begum did not know anything about the money allocated in her name. Talking to Parul Begum on her mobile phone, she told this reporter, “Brother, I don’t know whether I am the president of the project or not. No one has even told me about it.” And I have never seen if there is any cultural center in Burirhat. Tactically, the UP chairman has embezzled money from me by withdrawing the bill with my signature. He further said, “I did not do any work on that project and I did not raise any money.”
Accused Saar UP chairman Mohiuddin Azam Kiran declined to comment when asked about the matter on his mobile phone.
Upazila Assistant Engineer Mamunur Rahman said, “I have prepared the estimate of the project.” But I did not know that there was no such cultural center. Haider Zaman, upazila engineer, said, “I don’t have the documents for the project.” So I can’t say anything.
When Upazila Chairman Anisur Rahman was called on his mobile phone, he could not be reached for comment as he did not receive the call.
