19th Meeting of the Joint Steering Committee on India-Bangladesh Cooperation in the Power Sector

The 19th meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on India-Bangladesh Cooperation in Power Sector was held.

On Saturday 23 January the meeting was held at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka.

The Indian delegation was led by Shri Sanjeev Nandan Sahai, Secretary, Department of Power, Government of India and Mr. Md. Habibur Rahman led the Bangladesh delegation. Earlier, a meeting of the Joint Working Group on Cooperation in Power Sector (JWG) was held on January 21, 2021 at the same venue.

The Indian delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Power, National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Energy Efficiency Services Limited and the Ministry of External Affairs. Bangladesh was represented by the Department of Power, Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Water Resources, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited and Bangladesh Power Development Board.

The Steering Committee reviewed the progress of implementation of various decisions of the last JWG / JSC meeting and the status of the 1320 MW Maitri Super Thermal Power Project at Rampal.

Power trade between India and Bangladesh through various inter-links and various ways to further enhance cooperation in this important sector were discussed in detail.

Institutional arrangements for reviewing and expanding bilateral cooperation in the power sector between both the JSC and the JWG. The last such meetings were held in March 2020 in Udaipur, India.
