‘There is no harm in making a profit, but it should not be unusually high’ Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Elius Hossain on Thursday said stern action would be taken against anyone who was found to be involved in price manipulation during the month of Ramadan.

The DC delivered the warning during a view-exchange meeting with traders and consumers held at the conference hall of the Chattogram DC’s office. The Chittagong District Administration hosted the meeting in order to ensure uninterrupted supply of essentials and keep their prices stable during the month of fasting.

“There is no harm in making a profit, but it should not be unusually high. I request that all the business people carry out their business ethically. The traders of the port city have assured me that there is sufficient stock of essential items and prices will remain stable during Ramadan,” DC Elius said.

He also vowed to show zero tolerance for food adulteration during the month.

“I will not tolerate the selling of adulterated food items. Food adulterators will face jail terms as well as a fine,” the DC said.

Asking traders to display price charts and preserve all purchase documents, the DC also requested that consumers do not purchase essentials in bulk quantities during Ramadan as it makes the market unstable.

Syed Jamal Ahmed, vice-president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), assured that the price of essentials would remain stable during Ramadan as they did last year.

The business leader also asked the district administration to strengthen monitoring of the market.

Meanwhile, the traders present at the meeting urged the DC to ensure uninterrupted supply of utility services such as electricity, gas and water during the month of Ramadan
