Khaleda Zia gets five years in jail while the other five accused Tarique Rahman, Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, Kazi Salimul Haque, Mominur Rahman, and Sharfuddin Ahmed – get 10 years.

4pm- Khaleda’s lawyer Sanaullah Mia tells the reporters: “BNP chairperson has been kept at a special cell in Nazimuddin road’s jail.
“Since it will take time to get a certified copy of the verdict, we have requested the court for a photocopy so that we can appeal to the upper court on Sunday.”

He says: “The court has ordered to give BNP chairperson facilities in prison as enjoyed by a former prime minister. We will now send her personal belongings to the prison.”
Claiming that Khaleda did not get justice, the lawyer says: “BNP chief has asked the countrymen to stay patient.”


3:40pm- Chhatra League brings out joyous procession from TSC after the verdict, Fahim Reza Shovon reports.
3:25pm- While talking to the media after the verdict, Law Minister Anisul Huq says: “It depends on the decision of Supreme Court whether Khaleda can contest for the next election or not.
“As per constitution, a person cannot contest the national polls if he or she is sentenced to jail for two years or more.”
3:06pm- BNP leader Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin breaks down in tears outside the court.
He says: “Although we have implicit faith and trust in this court, the verdict has failed to satisfy us. We firmly believe the verdict is biased and compromised.
“The Standing Committee will convene and plan the next course of actions. We will inform the media of our further plans soon.”
3pm- Khaleda being taken to old central jail, our correspondent Ashif Islam Shaon reports from the spot.

2:56pm- Police arrest Khaleda’s Personal Secretary Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas from in front of the court, our correspondent Ashif Islam Shaon reports.
2:50pm- Mirza Fakhrul says: “The government wants to keep BNP out of politics.”
2:40pm- Khaleda Zia and her defence team prays for a certified copy of the entire verdict so that they may file an appeal as soon as possible.
Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, advisor to Khaleda Zia and vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, hopes Khaleda would receive bail promptly.

2:38pm- Law Minister Anisul Huq tells the reporters at secretariat: “As per law, Khaleda Zia will have to go to jail today.”
2:30pm- Khaleda Zia gets five years in jail while the other five accused Tarique Rahman, Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, Kazi Salimul Haque, Mominur Rahman, and Sharfuddin Ahmed – get 10 years.
The court also fines Tarique, Kamal, Kazi Salimul, Mominur, and Sharfuddin a total of Tk2.1 crore.
The judge notes that Khaleda received a lenient sentence in comparison to the others because of her age.
2:23pm- Joint Commissioner (Crimes) Krishna Pada Roy tells the Dhaka Tribune: “We allowed senior BNP leaders to enter the court with Khaleda Zia.
“We had to disperse the crowd when some BNP men tried to entire the court room forcefully.
He says: “Police detained some people from the spot.”

2:17pm- Judge starts reading out selective parts of the 632-page verdict.
2:14pm- Judge enters the court room.
2pm- A nine member team of Detective Branch officials enters the court premises after Khaleda’s motorcade, Fahim Reza Shovon reports.
1:50pm- Khaleda enters the court room wearing a cream coloured printed chiffon sari, a shawl of the same colour, and sunglasses, reports our correspondent Ashif Islam Shaon.
Meanwhile, police and BNP activists clash in Chankharpul area, our correspondent Arifur Rahman Rabbi.
1:45pm- An injured member of BNP chairperson’s Security Force (CSF) seen sitting inside the ambulance, our correspondents Md Sanaul Islam Tipu and Fahim Reza Shovon reports from the spot.
Another CSF member tells the Dhaka Tribune: “He was injured in an attack in Moghbazar.”
1:40pm- Khaleda’s motorcade, including an ambulance, enters into court premises.
1:38pm- Police and pro-BNP lawyers argue in court premises. Lawyers are giving slogans while police are trying to move them back.

1:30pm- Ramna police station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Moinul Islam says: “Those who were behind Khaleda’s motorcade attacked the cops.
“They have attacked us several times on the roads between Ramna police station to Kakrail.”
“BNP men were detained from the spot,” our correspondent Kamrul Hasan reports.

The OC says: “BNP men set a bike on fire in front of the residence of chief justice, and another one in front of Public Health Institute.”

1:28pm- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury enters the court premises.

1:15pm- Police clash with BNP supporters in Kakrail intersection.
BNP supporters set a bike on fire while police fire tear shells to disperse the crowd.

1:05pm- Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders take position in the gate of Alia Madrasa.

1pm- Police detain five BNP men from the procession lead by Mirza Fakhrul, our correspondent Kamrul Hasan reports from the spot.
However, police are yet to confirm the matter.

A huge number of BNP leaders and activists march towards the court.
12:55pm- Mirza Abbas says: “If the court gives proper judgement then our leader will be freed.”

Replying to a query about the next course of action, he says: “We have our own preparations. We will take to the streets with general people.”

12:50pm- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas leaves Nayapaltan office for court.

12:40pm: BNP leader Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Anny says: “We are going to the court area to support our leader. We will not create any chaos.”

12:30pm- Pro-BNP leaders take position in front of the court.

12:10pm- Police take position in front of BNP main office in Chittagong.

“Police have detained two BNP leaders while they were trying to enter Nasiman Bhaban,” reports our Chittagong correspondent Anwar Hussain.
11:43am- Khaleda’s motorcade leaves from her Gulshan house for court.

11:30am- Replying to a query about the verdict time, Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal says: “Khaleda Zia has secured bail in the case till 5pm. The court will wait for her till that time.
“If she doesn’t come by then, the court will declare verdict in her absence.”

10:45am- Members of law enforcement agencies install mobile jammer at a mini truck on the Alia Madrasa makeshift court premises, says a police official wishing anonymity.

10:35am- Members of law enforcement agencies arrest 19 BNP-Jamaat men in Kurigram, Kurigram District Control Room confirms.

10:24am- Habiganj ASP (Media) Nazim Uddin says: “At least 22 members of BNP and its affiliated organizations have been arrested.”

10:20am- Pro-BNP lawyers give slogans: “My leader is my mother, we won’t let her go to prison.”
Police are trying disperse them.

10:18am- Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of Dhaka’s Fifth Special Judge’s Court arrives.

10:05am- Pro BNP lawyers claim that police are not allowing them to enter the court premises despite being listed as lawyers for Khaleda Zia.
Meanwhile, pro-government lawyers are entering into the court premises with some public prosecutors and along with vehicles of the members of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

Some lawyers are standing in Bakshibazar area ahead of Khaleda’s verdict in Zia Orphanage Trust case on Februar 08.01.2012 reported by The News.

Pro-BNP lawyer Nazrul Islam Pappu said “The court is for lawyers and they [lawyers] are being barred from entering it. What kind of democracy is this?

“Lawyers will go to the court, conduct it, and this is part of democracy. We have been barred by the police.”

10:10am- A number of lawyers, including Jamir Uddin Sircar, enters the court.

9:45am- As pro-BNP and pro-Awami League lawyers try to enter the Alia Madrasa premises, DMP chief instructs the on duty police saying: “If anyone makes any trouble, change their faces.”

9:42am- Police bars Awami League and BNP leaning lawyers from entering court.

A total of 32 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed in seven districts, including Dhaka on Wednesday, to prevent possible acts of sabotage over the impending verdict in a graft case against BNP chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

9:40am- Director General (DG) of RAB Benazir Ahmed tells the media: “Some people are trying to spread rumours about the verdict in the cyber world.

“Action will be taken against those who spread misinformation in the internet and get involved in misdeeds.”

9:23am- Asaduzzaman Mia orders Lalbagh Zone DC to allow only the lawyers related to the trial of the case to enter the court.

9:00am- Police seal off Bakshibazar area, reports our Correspondent Ashif Islam Shaon adding that all the shops in the area are closed.
Police take two accused in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case–former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed– to the makeshift court at the Alia Madrasa premises.

8:45am- Our Correspondent Ashif Islam Shaon reports: “They [police] are checking the journalists in two different checkposts before allowing them to enter the court premises.
“Only one journalist from each media outlet is being given permission to enter the premises.”
He says police are checking a list of defence and prosecution lawyers, and allowing only the ones on the list to enter court.

8:35am- DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia says: “Only the members of law enforcement agencies will be allowed to enter the court premises with firearms.

“Even Khaleda Zia’s security guards will not be able to do so.”
He says: “We will provide security to her [Khaleda]. We would have done the same thing for any other accused.

“The general public has nothing to worry about.”
8:35am- Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia visits the court area with other high officials from police.

8:30am- Whishing anonymity, a high official of police tells The News: “It is very likely that the BNP chief will be kept in the day-care centre of the old central jail in Nazimuddin Road if she is convicted.”

8:20am- Police bar photographers with cameras from entering the ground near the special court in Bakshibazar, Dhaka.

8:10am- Some students take position in front of campuses of Dhaka University (DU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).
8am- A few vehicles are seen on the road ahead of the verdict.
