THE NEWS DESK: Greeting the Hindu community members on the occasion of Durga Puja and Bijoya Dashami, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday urged all, irrespective of their religion and colour, to remain alert about any type of evil act against the country’s religious harmony.

In a message issued on the occasion, the BNP chief said, “Bangladesh is a country of religious harmony. All, regardless of their religion and race, will have to remain alert against any evil act.”

The Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Hindus, begins on Tuesday and ends with the immersion of the goddess on September 30.

Khaleda alleged that the incidents of attack on worship places of religious minority communities and damaging of their idols and communal provocation have marked a sharp rise under the rule of the current government.

She voiced concern that the temples of Hindus and their houses came under attacks at many places of the country this year ahead of the Durga Puja. “Ruling party men have involvement in such incidents for destroying the country’s religious harmony. I strongly condemn the evil incidents.”

Khaleda said her party is committed to protecting the religious freedom of every citizen of the country. “We don’t believe in (religious) minority and majority theory. We all are Bangladeshis and this is our biggest identity,” she observed.

The BNP chief said any religious festival makes people’s fraternity even stronger and awaken their spirit of brotherhood. “The main message of all the religions is peace and welfare of human being. It’s the duty of all of us to devote ourselves towards establishing peace and equality in society shunning jealousy.”

She wished an all-out success of the Durga Puja.
